Welcome to Ice Boat Racing! This 99%-vanilla-compatible modpack aims to improve the base-game boat racing experience with mods such as BoatCam and Sodium, significantly optimizing the playability and competitiveness of this niche mode within Minecraft. It also supplies a short list of servers which aim to ease newer players into boat racing. The pack runs on most devices flawlessly, eliminating performance bottlenecks and increasing racing performance.
The core mods that enable this experience are:
- BoatCam: A mod focused on aiming your camera in the direction of your momentum, avoiding nausea and making the racing experience easier on the eyes. My personal settings are included and can be adjusted with Mod Menu.
- OpenBoatUtils: A mod that enables racing on surfaces with heavy friction, like Stone or Grass. This enables the use of custom physics!
- Bobby: A chunk-caching mod, aimed to lessen the probability of the server not supplying chunks fast enough to the fast-moving client. Bobby caches these chunks to disk, which eliminates the need to re-render chunks when you pass through a cached section of a track.
- BBBoatHud: A fully customizable recreation of the BoatHud mod that makes sure you can see your speed, lap time, and position in a race without overlapping interfaces!
The modpack also comes with the standard suite of performance-optimizing mods like Sodium, Lithium, and more.

Additionally, the Minecraft Ice Boat Racing Discord server is the main hangout for boat racers and has loads of information and content about racing. It also gives access to closed leagues. I highly recommend joining it; you can find it in the sidebar!
The servers supplied with the pack are a couple of the most popular multiplayer servers within the Ice Boat Racing community. They are all equipped with the TimingSystem plugin by Makkuusen, which can measure lap times accurately to the millisecond (1ms), mark checkpoints, and makes pitstops possible.
You should familiarize yourself with a couple of commands to get yourself started as soon as possible:
- /tt: Displays all tracks present on the server, with your leaderboard position and how much time you spent on the track. You can also use /tt {trackName} to travel to a track quickly.
- /t times {trackName}: Parses you the time leaderboard for the selected track, which lets you see how far you're from that praised track record.
- /heat quit: Started a race on a server but really don't want to finish it? Perform this command and you'll be removed from the race, at which point you can once again freely run tracks.
This server is dedicated to time attack records, with medals inspired by the likes of Trackmania and Redout. You can gain medals from Bronze to Gold, all the way up to Diamond. Do keep in mind that the highest medals require advanced techniques such as "blockstops" and "walltaps", which are a challenge of their own to learn and discover! It's the best optimized server on the list. Hosted in Europe.
Frosthex is your primary source for races accessible to the general public! Hosted in the US, the primary race type here is Formula (Craft) 1 and 2 races, based on known tracks from the F1 calendar. It also includes Rally tracks, enabled by the BoatUtils mod, which enables racing boats on land surfaces and gain the ability move the boat up and down blocks at high speeds. New tracks are added constantly and there are even weekly time attack battle tracks! Hosted on the US East Coast.

The FINAL 1.21.4 Version!
This update is focused on reducing performance overhead by removing features that not too many people used. It enables new support for Gift Lift, increases custom boat performance and slims down on unused mods, plus some new additions for quality of life!
For the people that missed it, o7moon, the main developer of OpenBoatUtils, has stepped back and has handed over development to some of the most prominent developers within Ice Boat Racing. We'd like to thank them for the absolutely massive contributions to the niche, and if ever they want to contribute again, we'll welcome them back with open arms.
This is also the first build to have been tested on all major operating systems: Windows 11, MacOS Tahoe (MacBook Neo), and Linux (6.18 kernel, Bazzite)!
Added a button in GUI options to shortcut to the BoatLabs Mod settings
Fixed an issue where transparent surfaces would fail to render behind display entities that had transparent elements
Dev note: Particles fail to render behind transparent surfaces, this is still being investigated!
Adjustments:
- Lowered default maximum render distance set by Bobby to 40 chunks
This is due to me having a stroke seeing people run 96 chunks on integrated graphics. (if you know how to change it back, feel free to!)
- Applied a forced override for the default supplied config for Continuity due to high performance impact on custom boats. The option to enable it now has a special tooltip to warn the user prior to enabling it.
- Updated default supplied config for Cubes Without Borders for MacOS
- Xaero's Minimap size adjustment is now a toggle instead of a hold
- Changed the BRWC server listing to the new IceDrifters name and adjusted assets accordingly
Splash texts:
- Added new splash texts for FC1 2026 and Formula Mario
- Added the top 5 constructors for Pacific Superseries as splash texts
- Added IBR World Cup, W4FC, IEC, and GOLF(h) to the splash texts
- Added the Summit season 2 teams as splash texts
Added the following mods:
Updated the following mods:
Removed the following mods:
FOR SOME REASON, Iris cached all Display Entities on every single frame, causing high performance degredation in areas where many entities were present. This is the single biggest performance gain for areas such as the server spawns.
The WorldMap had a weird issue where every time a chunk border was crossed, a lag spike would occur. To fix this, the mod needed to be removed. If you desperately need a WorldMap, I recommend getting JourneyMap instead and disabling the minimap. If you add the mod manually, it should already be preconfigured, apart from the keybinds.

This hotfix contains a critical fix to OpenBoatUtils where interpolation would suddenly get reinitialized, breaking it for the rest of the session. Some research has been done with o7Moon, and it will no longer happen!

Small hotfix for some small but worth-to-fix issues! The next update will focus on reducing the number of incompatible mods and working on some incompatibility notifications for some league-regulated mods. Stay tuned :D

Here it is, the grand update to 1.21.4! Featuring a lot of new tech for BoatLabs and a supporting mod for the eighth edition of World's Longest Course, this is by far the highest update-to-update improvement yet, for both performance and player experience.
After a talk with other racers and users, it's been decided to keep Axiom out of the modpack due to the possibility of forcing users into the Axiom UI unknowingly, and possibly not knowing how to leave the UI. Feel free to add it yourself, though! It's been thoroughly tested and will not influence your racing experience.
Modified Water Vision behavior to be more aesthetically pleasing :D

This also marks the official END of fully-featured CurseForge support. It's been incredibly hard trying to maintain a pack on a platform where so many mods are absent or need to be manually approved. Instead, CurseForge will transform into a type of long-term support build where only critical mods are present to maintain stability. CurseForge users should migrate themselves to Modrinth or a supporting launcher for the (new) best experience!

Aaaand now we're onto 1.21! It's mostly the same pack, bar MANY bugfixes that were accidentally left in with the 1.8.1 release. This update also adds fixes for MacOS devices, mainly Apple ARM devices.
I want to note that in the future that I'll put more time in QA and bugtesting, which should become easier with the new Issue Reporter menu. This is directly linked to a GitHub issue page, and should result in higher quality updates in the future.
Added Mods:
- Updated IBR 1.8.1 included mods to 1.21 versions
- Added BoatHUD 1.21
- Added Just Zoom
- Note: WorldEditCUI is currently on a preview release. This means that it's incompatible with the local WorldEdit mod.
Removed Mods
- Removed BoatHUD Extended
- Removed Zoomify
- Removed WorldEdit (see Notes)
- Removed 3DSkinLayers due to large performance impact

That's it for this patch note and the 1.9.0 update. The focus now shifts to the 1.9 Lite release for CF, which I estimate to release at the end of next week. Until that, enjoy the races and stay frosty :D

Not a whole lot going on in this one, apart from enabling emmissive textures to the custom boats on BoatLabs.
I've decided to sack both BoatHUD Compact and IBR Extras because they were causing too many issues for players that ran any monitor size differing from 16:9 1080p. Instead, you now have BoatHUD Extended Edition, which features more stuff and visual inputs, in addition to being able to use telemetry.
This will be the definitive 1.20.4 release unless critical updates arise, while I wait for the final mods to update to 1.21!
If you're wondering where the lite version has gone, it's been moved over to CurseForge. I'm too scared of accidentally auto-updating making the new influx of users to a version that is stripped down to function as a barebones kit.
The CurseForge Lite update is now in active development. It should release before the end of next week (if all goes well)!
Added Mods:
- Added BoatHUD Extended Edition (version 1.0.0)
- Added Entity Culling (version 1.6.6)
- Added Puzzle (version 1.6.1)

- Updated XaeroPlus (2.18 > 2.21)

Will return in the lite version due to optimization
- Removed IBR Extras
IBR Extras was never rendering correctly on higher display resolutions and different than stock UI scaling settings. Ultimately, I got too annoyed, and removed it.
- Removed EarlyLoadingScreen
For some reason this was a primary cause of crashes.
- Removed Options Profiles
It just kept breaking stuff. Sorry if anyone used this mod!

Today marks the day that the Ice Boat Racing modpack updates to 1.20.4. If you're running a personalized or customized version of the modpack, it's recommended to back up your mods prior to updating, so you can make a list of what mods you want to re-import.
This pack version was heavily based on 1.21, but due to OpenBoatUtils as of the time of writing not being on 1.21, I've had to stick to 1.20.4. 1.21 isn't far away though!
As the Lite version is also supposed to be released on CurseForge, there is a delay in making that release happen. Due to the large amount of changes present in 1.8, I require more time get certain mods CurseForge approved, and select mods need standalone version that aren't dependant on libraries.

Your regular mod update and bugfix update! After going through some feedback, I've adjusted some options, to both ease the transition into the new visuals and not to alienate the existing playerbase. That also brings me to the next section of this update!
Due to many radical design changes in the 1.7 update, this version exists as a "pure" pack. This means that all unnecessary visual fidelity has been stripped from the pack, and purely performance and boat related stuff remains.
It also serves as a barebones kit to add your own selection of mods onto! I recommend turning off Automatic Updates if you do so, as your mods could be overwritten!

After... 3+ months? Jeez. This took a while, but this update FINALLY lays the foundations for the visual overhaul planned for 2.0.
From here on out, I've chosen to transition from the default BoatCam mod to sBoatCam, a mod maintained by Shizuya (ho51), to include more options like a new algorithm and more options to change how the camera behaves.
The old BoatCam algorithm is default. To regain your settings, please subtract your old Smoothness setting number from 100, and set that as your Smoothing option. The strength at 50 is equal to the old behavior.
It's not certain that this inclusion is permanent, but it will provide a more customizable experience for all players!
The other main headlines is reverting back to the Fabric loader, as Quilt was logging too much garbage, the inclusion of Early Loading Screen, to make the game-load process more responsive, FancyMenu, to make all the custom stuff work, and many of it's dependencies to lay the groundwork for 2.0. And of course, that little bit more quality of life and those performance fixes!
P.S. Don't like how things look? With Ctrl + Alt + C, a menu will pop up, select the first dropdown, and select "Killswitch all screen customization." This will globally disable any custom screens and buttons!

Ahhh, time to update the modpack again. I hope you all had lovely Christmas festivities!
This update contains more performance, some start-up speed, an OpenBoatUtils patch and some additional QoL. There's also some fixes that I seem to have overlooked (like the swapped Sprint/Sneak binds)!
The Modrinth version is once again ahead of CurseForge due to their spotty Quilt support, so I recommend sticking to Modrinth for the faster updates!
Updated SimpleVoiceChat (2.4.28 > 2.4.32)

Welcome to the first step into making the modpack more visually appealing, while still providing the excellent base and performance optimizations. A lot of stuff got reconfigured, plus QoL for people recording and/or streaming the modpack, like an input viewer!
It also features the standard performance increase, NVIDIA users will notice the biggest increase due to the inclusion of a mod that uses specific calls that that series of cards supports. It will disable automatically if it detects a different brand.
Addiotionally, I would like to reiterate that the modpack provides a base to add your own mods to. Although I cannot gurantee its stability with user-added mods, it's by design that you should add your own mods if you find a feature missing. (Keep in mind that when you update the modpack, your added mods could be removed. This depends on the launcher you use.)
This update brings the pack in line with its Modrinth counterpart, due to CurseForge now allowing Quilt modpacks. All the bug reports can now be fit in one place!
Added WaveyCapes (1.3.2), starts waving capes when going over ~200 Km/h
Updated BetterF3 (7.0.1 > 7.0.2)
Downgraded Chat Utils mod (1.10.1 > 1.10.0) due to a crash with Chat Heads
Changed standard supplied config to enable Adaptive V-Sync and add bindings for new mods
A lot of stuff I want to add in the future will decrease performance in the main menu. This is the least used part of the entire modpack right now, so it should only decrease launching performance as it will be using a combination FancyMenu and LoadMyResources. I want to make custom main menu buttons, background video and a composed main menu theme, to truly set the stage and experience that I intend with the intended product of the modpack. So far, I want to thank you all for the journey. I never thought that these numbers were achievable, let alone the popularity the modpack has gained among boat racers. Thank you all for playing, and to many more records to set!

An update that updates BoatUtils to OpenBoatUtils made by o7moon, making the Fabric CurseForge version fully playable too! It also adds kennytvs-epic-force-close-loading-screen-mod-for-fabric (absolutely epic name) and more stuff to not get replaced with YOSBR, to protect your precious settings.
Do remove the old BoatUtils if it remains in your mods folder because it results in a crash.

This update updates Sodium to 0.5, plus of course your standard suite of updates and QoL!
The 1.4 version number update is because of the impact that Sodium 0.5 has on the performance. Mount Akina performance (20 chunks, RTX 3060) went from 139fps average, to 232 average. That's a 66% performance increase!
Along with the return of the CurseForge Fabric version, the modpack is finally up to standard with popular modpacks.
Keep in mind that the CF version needs manual installation of BoatUtils, should the user want to race on tracks with elevation.

Edit: I suck at grammar so that's fixed, thanks Grammarly
This version updates BoatCam to 1.20! This is a custom version, which means the algorithm is slightly different but you shouldn't notice any difference.
The rest is a regular update adding some performance and QoL, plus providing the usual updates! This update will also align the modpack with the pack I use for events and building.

Some minor adjustments to make the racing experience slightly better! Most notable is the removal of the VeryManyPlayers mod, because it kicked me during a 40 player Blind Attack race. Since then I've considered the mod not stable enough for competitive events.

Welcome to the 1.20 update, now updated for boat racing! After a tough month of updating and reconfiguring the old (and new) mods, I can confidently release this for the public for events.
Note that these patch notes are reflecting from 1.1.1(-Quilt), not the testing builds.

Welcome to the 1.20 update, now being updated for boat racing! Please note that this modpack update so far is in BETA. I'm not liable for any instabilities during races.
Note that these patch notes are reflecting from 1.1.1-Quilt, not the testing builds.
Known Issues:
- Simple Voice Chat is on 2.4.10 while all servers currently use 2.4.2. It should be backwards compatible (apart from BoatLabs' BlindAttack subserver, which is on 2.3.8 and is fully incompatible).
- FrostHex does not support the new BoatUtils yet so any of those tracks are broken right now. Sorry for the inconvenience!

BoatCam is still running a 1.19.1 version, it could create instabilities but it seems to work fine for now, consider it experimental
VeryManyPlayers is currently running a development version, so consider it experimental. I've chosen to continue running VMP because of the upcoming BlueCity Circuit event which will host a race with more than 50 people.
Currently using the ClothConfig 1.20 API instead of a 1.20.1 version because it doesn't exist yet, which could cause instabilities

Possible addition for beta release:
- CameraUtils (possible further customizability for users)
- ReplayMod (to record your boat races/runs)
- Reese's Sodium Options (customizability)

This update doesn't change anything within the modpack itself, however, it swaps out the Fabric client for Quilt. I've decided on this because Quilt offers more futureproofing and gives access to new mods if the user wants to add them.
It also sets a fresh platform for 1.20, when all mods are ready to be updated!

If this hotfix doesn't automatically remove C2ME, please do so manually. Bobby and C2ME clash within the Sodium Chunk Renderer which causes a stuttery FPS mess.

Added the following mods:
- MoreCulling (General FPS increase)
- Cull Less Leaves (To combat harsh leaf culling from MoreCulling)
- FerriteCore (Lowers RAM usage, less long-time play stutter)
- Concurrent Chunk Management Engine (C2ME, should lower the amount of stuttering when loading previously unvisited chunks, a specific fix for Blind Attack event)
- ImmediatelyFast (Smoothens the launch of the game)
- Item Model Fix (Fixes delta fighting on colliding boats)
- Krypton (Should make hitboxes concerning boat bumps more consistent(ly annoying), based on your own network latency)
- Very Many Players (Improves FPS during large races, mainly FC1/FC2, BA)
- MoreChatHistory (Because I was annoyed at not seeing checkpoints further back)
Updated:
- Memory Leak Fix (1.0.0 Beta 6 > 1.0.0 Release, version bump)
Mod Configuration Updates:
- Added MoreCulling config so it doesn't fight with Cull Less Leaves during rendering
- Added Krypton config for optimizing boat updates to make sure you don't randomly phase through boats and get lagged back when you definitely had a server-side collision
- Fixed a Bobby misconfiguration that caused chunks being present in the wrong world when swapping worlds within a server
- Updated BoatCam settings (increased default stiffness to be less immediate when performing reverse entries)
- Disabled ModMenu's "Update available!" diamond (They are still present within the Mods menu itself, should the need arise!)
Mod Notes:
- Most of these are optimization mods that I experimented with during some funraces, so please consider them as such. However, these mods do improve framerates by a lot, so your inputs should be more consistent for racing.
- EntityCulling was tested, but was found unreliable during high-speed sections in races.
- FrostHex ABG is updating their SVC version, you should be able speak to other players again soon! They will be running 2.4.2, however, newer mod versions should be backwards compatible if you ever decide to update it on your own.

Added/Changed the following mods:
- Added Ugly Scoreboard Fix (+ CompleteConfig)
- BoatUtils > BoatUtils Blind Attack Edition
While this does break rally tracks, the BA version will be standardized going forward.
Updated the following mods:
- Iris Shaders (1.5.x > 1.6.1)
- Simple Voice Chat (2.3.28 > 2.4.2)
Note: FrostHex ABG is in the process of updating their SVC version, if you see a notice that your version is mismatching,
Other Changes
- For fresh installs: Changed BRWC IP adress to match the current stable proxy.
- Users that are updating need to manually adjust it, the new IP is "brwc.grub-bros.de"
